Covid-19
What a crazy world we live in today. Covid-19 aka Coronavirus is taking over the whole world at the moment. Coronavirus is a group of RNA viruses that cause a variety of diseases in humans and other animals. In Kentucky, there are 1,008 cases of the coronavirus and there has sadly, been 59 deaths so far. As the days move and more and more people are getting it and dying, people are starting to see the severity of this pandemic. We should all stay as safe as possible and limit all social events and should stay home to prevent this disease from spreading and more people getting sick and dying. Also, washing your hands properly will help germs from spreading.
This pandemic has affected my daily life in so many ways. For one, I don’t go to school anymore and all schools have moved to online school. I actually miss school. I miss all of my friends that I see everyday, and I also miss my teachers. In addition, I play AAU basketball which would’ve started by now. It is being suspended until at least June. This means there is going to be no live period where college coaches can come and recruit kids and have camps. AAU stops in August so middle school and high school kids can prepare for school ball, which for most kids starts in September. We might only get three months of AAU basketball instead of six months. This is terrible for all basketball players. Even the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini Marathon that I run in
every year is being pushed back to late August. This event takes place every year in late April.
Coronavirus is ruining everything. I understand why everything is being canceled because they want to prevent the spread and people dying, but it is unfortunate. I feel bad for all seniors in the class of 2020 around the world. If you're a senior, this is your last year playing the sport you love. For spring sport athletes, their sport was just about to begin. Their season got cancelled before it even got started. This is so sad and terrible. From the perspective of an athlete myself, you put in countless hours of hard work preparing for the season and it just gets ripped away from you. It's like doing all of the work for nothing. But, all that we can do is pray for the best and that all of this ends soon. Also, we should try to stay clean and wash our hands as much as possible.
We should be practicing social distancing as much as possible to prevent this disease. Social distancing is a term applied to certain actions that are taken by Public Health officials to stop or slow down the spread of a highly contagious disease by requiring a physical distance of at least 6 feet between people. Stay home and only go out when you have to go to the grocery store. If people would do this then life would return to normal quicker. The scary part about this disease is that you could get it and not even know you have it, this is called being “asymptomatic”. If you don’t even know you have it and keep doing normal things, then all those people that you have encountered are now potentially infected with coronavirus and more and more people will get infected.
In conclusion, the government is currently working on a vaccine that will help prevent coronavirus. But, it takes at the earliest eighteen months for a vaccine to eventually reach the market and for it to be available to the public. Doctors and researchers have to test the drug to make sure it is safe to the public and that it will help cure the virus first. So, in the meantime while we are waiting for this vaccine to help us all, we should do what we can by practicing social distancing and staying clean as much as possible. What a crazy world we live in today.
